It's like riding a bike...

C. and I are learning to snowboard. It's great and here's why: First of all, we're taking group lessons, which means there is a very strange assortment of people in our classes. Our first class consisted of a fifteen-year-old girl who was somehow way better than the rest of us, C. (who is fourteen turning fifteen on wednesday!), me, three adults from some foreign country (possibly middle-eastern), and a very disgruntled instructor. All of the adults shall we say... struggled. It was SO funny. One of the ladies couldn't even stand up (I'm serious, she was sitting on her butt, and literally could not get up) and we ended up waiting for them for at least five minutes every time we moved locations, even just two feet in one direction. Anyways, we ended up going down the bunny hill ONCE in the entire course of the lesson. But I actually did learn a lot, and picked it up fairly fast so it was still somewhat productive. However, just because it was productive doesn't mean I didn't fall every other second and run into a tree and a pole, and also at one point end up somehow wedged between a pole and one of those orange flag things. Overall a great experience. Our second lesson was much better, it's called "Learning to Turn" so, big surprise, we learned to turn. The toe-side to heel-side turn was a piece of cake, but oh man, heel-side to toe-side, not so much. However, I was somewhat lucky and after falling on my face only twice, managed to (with complete luck and none of my own merit) perform a perfect turn. Then once I knew what it was supposed to feel like, it was pretty easy. I am proud to say that I can now perform as many S-curves as I want without falling (except for when people cut in front of me and I just fall on my butt to stop because I'm not all that confident in my stopping skills. Needless to say my butt is literally bruised). But seriously, I love it. It's totally humbling, hilarious, great bonding time with my sister, and somehow way more fun than skiing (sorry to you faithful skiers). I just keep telling myself that it's like riding a bike. I'll only have to learn once. That thought gives me much needed comfort as I'm lying there flat on my back or with my face freshly pressed into the lovely and freezing snow.
